Water heaters are common equipment found in most homes. They are used to heat water for showers, dishwashers, washing machines, taps, and more. There are two main types of water heaters based on their energy source: gas and electric.

Gas heaters are the most common type. They heat water quickly and are more cost-effective compared to electric heaters. They can use two types of gases: LP and natural gas. While similar, some parts of natural gas heaters cannot be used in LP heaters.

Electric heaters have fewer parts compared to natural gas heaters. They have only two main parts responsible for water heating and are considered safe and reliable.

In both types of heaters, the cold water enters the tank through an immersion tube. In gas heaters, a burner located at the bottom of the tank heats the water by burning gas. In electric heaters, metal stems inside the tank transfer heat to the water through electricity. A thermostat at the bottom of the tank monitors and regulates the water temperature. There are modern tankless models of heaters that do not require storage tanks, saving space and energy.

Most of the elements that make up water heaters are metallic, such as steel tanks and rods, brass valves and connections, and copper tubes. These materials can be recycled.
