Stainless steel scrap is an item we regularly see in our Los Angeles metal recycling yard. As we detailed in earlier metal recycling posts one of the values stainless steel is that other metals such as nickel can be gotten from it during the recycling process. Here in the United States, stainless steel production relies on as much as 80% recycled material. Other countries such as India also have high percentage of recycled stainless steel in their production. According to Recycling Today, however, China has a different system and uses much less recycled stainless steel.

That means that the market for scrap stainless steel in China is going to be much less than countries such as the United States. As Recycling Today states in their article, China is very dependent on nickel pig iron in their stainless production and as a result uses only about 25% of scrap stainless steel as feedstock.

Another interesting fact regarding the future of stainless steel prices comes from the fact that there is a big, global push for all electric cars. Compared to internal combustion vehicles, electric cars will not use as much stainless steel and them since the majority of these metals are found in the exhaust system of internal combustion vehicles.

“Stainless steel scrap prices” is a popular search on Google.  A few thousand people search for this term each month. It’s not hard to determine why. Although a common metal stainless steel is important invaluable because it’s made up other metals that in and of themselves are valuable. Think about nickel for molybdenum. Yesterday we wrote a brass scrap prices because the mental fetches a good price per pound but stainless steel is also a good metal to recycle.

Many scrappers that come through our doors are repeat customers and they have extensive experience in metal recycling. However, if you’re just getting into scrapping and you’re looking for a Burbank recycling center, probably one of the first things you’ll do is look up the price of stainless steel scrap. There are a number of websites available that list scrap metal prices (in indeed TM Scrap Metals has its own scrap metal pricing page)  you’ll probably run into a site like scrapmonster.com which List the various metal prices and compares things like prepared versus unprepared scrap.

Taking a look at their continuously updated list you can see that unprepared stainless steel scrap goes for about $.22 per pound where is prepared stainless steel scrap fetches about $.45 per pound. There’s a difference on the order of 50% between prepared and unprepared stainless steel and the question arises, are you as the seller of scrap metal, willing to do what it takes to prepare the metal you want to recycle?

It’s the same principle that we touched on when talking about wire recycling. Copper

Scrap copper is a great metal to recycle because it pays a lot. Copper is in high demand and you can find it in many places around the house. This includes things like appliances–including the wires to those appliances–as well as old copper pipes. If you’re doing some plumbing there’s a good chance that you have some leftover copper that can be recycled for scrap

Brass

On the heels of copper  is brass. This is another high-paying scrap metal that is found in a lot of household items. Brass is found in things like door handles or trophies or electrical components. You may not realize how much brass you have lying around your house but it’s used for a lot of things which is why it’s a valuable metal. And it’s easier to recycle then it is to create brass from scratch.

Silver

Silver is another metal makes a lot of sense to recycle. In some cases a scrap metal dealer can pay you more for your silver then what you might get elsewhere.  You probably know that you have a lot of old silver on hand and things like silverware–of course–or old jewelry and things of that nature. Aluminum

Recycling stainless steel for cash is often overlooked because so many objects today are made from stainless steel. However, the value of stainless steel often comes from the fact that is made up of other metals such as chromium or nickel.  Depending on the amount of nickel in stainless steel you may get more or less cash for recycling.  Still, do not overlook this common metal. Because it’s resistant to rust stainless steel can be found in a lot of kitchen tools and automobile parts.

Gold

Gold as a scrap metal doesn’t seem obvious but it can be a lucrative metal to recycle for cash. Yes, we’re all familiar with gold jewelry or coins but gold is used in a lot of electronics. If the old electronic devices you have on hand contain gold it can be a good idea to  recycle these. Extracting precious metals like gold from electronics is known as harvesting. It’s not easy to extract gold from some electronic devices but gold prices are at all-time highs and you can get a higher return on this metal than other types of scrap metal.

Lead

Lead may not be the most glamorous scrap metal but I can’t prove to be lucrative at the scrap metal yard. That’s because lead is traditionally coveted by recycling centers and in high demand.  It may be more difficult to transport to the scrap metal dealer given its heavy weight.
