At San Fernando Valley’s Favorite Scrap Metal Buyers

Scrappers of Burbank: there’s a lot going on in your town. We see the progress every time we venture outside the confines of our scrap metal recycling center here in Sun Valley. A cruise down I-5 and we can see the progress on the Burbank Blvd bridge that will soon (once again) span Interstate 5 and connect the two halves of Burbank. Near that bridge construction however, it’s apparent that another big construction project is going on in downtown Burbank. This is the First Street Village project which was begun not too long ago and is slated for completion in 2023. It will occupy the area of downtown Burbank on First Street, from Magnolia to the alley southeast of Palm. The 6-story buildings will house retail shops as well as apartments on the top floors.

Burbank, CA is undergoing a construction boom. Scrappers can bring construction metals to us!

That’s not the only construction project going on—not by a long shot. Avion Burbank is the largest construction project in the San Fernando Valley and it looks it. We see it every time we drive down Hollywood Way on our way from Sun Valley to Burbank. This project is nearing completion and will contain warehouses, retail, restaurants and a hotel. The warehouses alone (which will be used by Amazon) total more than 1 million square feet.

There are other projects in the works or being considered by the Burbank City council. All this means a host of construction and all the leftover materials that invariably come with building. Some metal materials used in construction include things like rebar, metal sheathed electrical wires, those bright and shiny copper wires we love so much as well as metal items that may be specific to the design of a particular building. To Burbank or other San Fernando Valley scrappers, we say, if you’ve got a bunch of waste construction materials (metal, of course) or construction or demolition debris, TM Scrap Metals is the destination to bring those metals to for cash!

Burbank construction generates debris and scrap metal to be recycled.

We mention Burbank in this post since it does border our Sun Valley location and it’s experiencing a spurt of building in these last couple of years, but the same advice could apply to Glendale scrappers, those in Encino or Woodland Hills. If you find yourself in possession of scrap metal, bring it to us! Or (and here’s where we repeat ourselves ad infinitum) we’ll come to you! Yes, we once again promote our mobile metal recycling service, but why not? It’s true and it makes scrapping for cash extremely simple. Call us and we’ll come to you wherever you are in Los Angeles or the San Fernando Valley. 818-771-0510.

Scrap Metal Recycling Unaffected at TM Scrap Metals

Los Angeles recycling centers apparently suffered greatly during the height of the coronavirus outbreak. Back in December the Los Angeles times published an article detailing the trials and tribulations of the recycling industry in the Southland. While the result of the Coronavirus was that many scrap metal recycling centers closed their doors for some time, people found it difficult to locate a place to take their excess scrap metals.

According to the article, however, there was another incident that affected scrap metal yards around the country even before the effects of COIVD-19 were being felt. There was a collapse of the recycling market because many buyers overseas were not purchasing the amount of scrap materials that they had in the past. This caused a significant number of recycling centers to shutter their doors. Because of this and after being hit by the second punch of the coronavirus, many recycling centers closed up shop.

This caused people who wanted to recycle to find other places to take their scrap metal. While some recycling centers went out of business, others like us–TM Scrap Metals in Sun Valley, California–to deal with a surge in scrap metal customers. One company’s loss is another company’s gain as it turns out.

Los Angeles recycling center aluminum rims

As of June 15 fifteenth of this year we can fairly safely say that the shutdowns and restrictions imposed is the coronavirus are mostly a thing of the past as California begins the process of getting back to business and recovering both physically and financially from the coronavirus. However, this is all a long way of saying that TM Scrap Metals continues to service the scrap metal recycling market. We have been fortunate in that we have not felt the effects here that other scrap metal dealers in and around Los Angeles have felt.

Metal Recycling for All San Fernando Valley

With the closure of the number of metal recycling facilities in the Southland scrappers may need to locate another facility to take their scrap metals to. If that’s your situation we just wanted to say that we are open and busy! We are the Los Angeles recycling center of choice for a variety of reasons. One is that we are conveniently located just off Interstate 5 in Sun Valley, north of Burbank. This makes us an ideal location for all San Fernando Valley metal recycling

And we also like to stress the fact that because of our mobile recycling service it doesn’t matter where you are in greater Los Angeles. If you have scrap metal you need to recycle for cash we can come to you and pick it up. If COVID-19 put your recycling plans on hold and you have an over abundance of scrap metal you need to recycle, call TM Scrap Metals today. 818-771-0510.

L.A. Scrap Yard Takes a Look at This Unique Situation

Recycling waste items at a Los Angeles recycling center is now viewed as being one of the most crucial elements for any organization, and an auto workshop is no various from the norm. With both ecological advantages in the form of a decrease in the quantity of raw materials needed by market, and a monetary benefit in lowering the expense of getting rid of hazardous waste, recycling is an important factor to consider for any size organization, and one of the most uncomplicated chances in a workshop is an oil filter crusher, which can prepare these otherwise large items for scrap metal recycling, as well as eliminating the waste oil for appropriate disposal.

With the majority of run of the mill engine oil filters, a complex series of one way valves is used to manage the flow of oil through the filter. This avoids the sludge that build up in time flowing back out of the trap and after that polluting the rest of the oil supply in a vehicle. Since old filters still contain all the sludge and waste oil, they must be dealt with by a specialist handler, with a big expense.

Recycling center Los Angeles oil filter metal photo

By putting the filter through an oil filter crusher, all of the remaining waste inside it is forced out as the filter is compressed. All that is left is the metal that made up the system, which can be recycled merely and does not need any special handling. The staying oil is collected in a collection drum for easy rapid disposal in line with the guidelines of the EPA. The expense of this approach is obviously much lower, so with time the initial payment for or investment in an oil filter crusher for a workshop will pay off enormously.

Los Angeles Recycling Center Invests in Oil Filter Crusher

Oil filter crushers work utilizing a heavy task piston that presses down on the used filter, splitting it apart, and flattening it totally. Once the waste filter has been loaded into the hopper all that is needed is a single button press, and then the device will run through its program, leaving the filter ready for recycling and the waste oil in a drum.

With a higher quality model like the Crushmaster 1, the air powered ram compresses the old filters with around 13,000 lbs of force. This means that it can handle approximately 4 waste filters at a time, and operate dependably. Thanks to the exceptional develop quality of the item, it requires extremely little ongoing maintenance, and need to work normally for several years.

The much more effective Crushmaster 2, which has an even higher capacity than its brother or sister, and as one of the most effective oil filter crushers on the market, can contact a 4 HP electrical motor that will provide around 37,500 lb of force– ample to deal with even big truck oil filters.

These 2 high quality crushers are readily available with a convenient stand that has actually been developed especially to handle them and make their use additionally safe and hassle-free.

With the majority of regular engine oil filters, a complicated series of one method valves is used to control the flow of oil through the filter. By putting the filter through an oil filter crusher, all of the remaining waste inside it is forced out as the filter is compressed. Once the waste filter has been packed into the hopper all that is required is a single button press, and then the machine will run through its program, leaving the filter prepared for recycling and the waste oil in a drum.

Recycling Aluminum Cans a Popular Pastime

Your local Los Angeles scrap yard, TM Scrap Metals, is the first name in scrap metal recycling. Through our gate pass tons of the most recyclable metals in the world. People who regularly sell scrap metal to a recycling center like ours are well aware of which metals pay the most money and why. However, we have to say that aluminum cans have a special place in our heart and in the hearts of all scrappers around the world. That’s because aluminum cans are ubiquitous. For better or for worse finding aluminum cans to bring the scrap yard is not difficult. Yes, enterprising scrappers may sometimes go to great lengths, searching through trash cans and dumpsters for aluminum cans, but due to some peoples’ propensity to littering, there are plenty of aluminum cans to be found on the ground alone.

Aluminum can recycling at Los Angeles scrap yard

One of the things that makes aluminum a great metal to recycle, aside from its abundance is its weight. Aluminum is a very light metal and it’s easy to collect aluminum cans because they take up very little space when crushed. And because it’s such a light, flexible metal it is easy to crush these cans.

While recycling heavier metals such as brass or copper may bring in a greater return, aluminum–in the form of cans–is just so darned omnipresent that even a novice to scrap metal recycling can amass a large pile.

If we look at it from certain perspective, the fact that some people go around collecting cans for recycling is great for the environment. It’s the rare can that will see the inside of a landfill. And because so many aluminum cans are recycled annually and through melting can be turned into brand-new aluminum cans once again, the amount of energy needed to create these products is much less than if aluminum had to be created from scratch. As we have written in earlier scrap metal recycling posts it’s about 90% less energy.

We think scrap metal recycling is a win-win proposition no matter what the metal may be, but as we said there’s a special place in our heart for aluminum, and specifically aluminum cans, that we wanted to make special mention in this article.

Aluminum Cans Scrap Prices

If you’re looking for a Burbank recycling center that handles scrap metals, then TM Scrap Metals will be your top choice. It’s a hop skip and a jump to our location in Sun Valley from anywhere in Burbank. However, even if you’re in Van Nuys or Chatsworth and you’re looking to recycle aluminum, brass, copper–especially large amounts that may be too heavy to move by yourself,–you need only call TM Scrap Metals and take advantage of our mobile recycling service. Got recycling questions? We’ve got answers. Call us at 818-771-0510.

Los Angeles is always undergoing construction renovation during these processes there are a lot of materials used that contain metal. Not every inch of the material going to be used in the construction process which means that there is probably going to be some leftover metal that can be sold for scrap. Some of these metals are relatively high paying. Below is a list of the top seven metals you can sell as scrap. Keep in mind that nonferrous metals aluminum, brass copper are going to pay more than ferrous metals. Ferrous metals are those metals that contain iron.

Most valuable scrap metals in Los Angeles

Copper

Scrap copper is a great metal to recycle because it pays a lot. Copper is in high demand and you can find it in many places around the house. This includes things like appliances–including the wires to those appliances–as well as old copper pipes. If you’re doing some plumbing there’s a good chance that you have some leftover copper that can be recycled for scrap

Brass

On the heels of copper is brass. This is another high-paying scrap metal that is found in a lot of household items. Brass is found in things like door handles or trophies or electrical components. You may not realize how much brass you have lying around your house but it’s used for a lot of things which is why it’s a valuable metal. And it’s easier to recycle then it is to create brass from scratch.

Silver

Silver is another metal makes a lot of sense to recycle. In some cases a scrap metal dealer can pay you more for your silver then what you might get elsewhere. You probably know that you have a lot of old silver on hand and things like silverware–of course–or old jewelry and things of that nature. Taking your old excess silver to the scrap metal dealer is a way to make easy cash.

Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the most recognizable metals at the recycling center because we’re so familiar with aluminum drink cans and so many people collect fees for recycling. Aluminum, as we refer to earlier, is a nonferrous metal and can fetch more than those metals which contain iron. Aluminum cans are not the only items made from this metal and you may have other aluminum objects around your home that can be recycled for cash at a scrap metal yard like ours. Think about bicycle frames, parts of an automobile and even computers. All these contain aluminum.

Recycling scrap metal in your Los Angeles backyard

Stainless Steel

Recycling stainless steel for cash is often overlooked because so many objects today are made from stainless steel. However, the value of stainless steel often comes from the fact that is made up of other metals such as chromium or nickel. Depending on the amount of nickel in stainless steel you may get more or less cash for recycling. Still, do not overlook this common metal. Because it’s resistant to rust stainless steel can be found in a lot of kitchen tools and automobile parts.

Gold

Gold as a scrap metal doesn’t seem obvious but it can be a lucrative metal to recycle for cash. Yes, we’re all familiar with gold jewelry or coins but gold is used in a lot of electronics. If the old electronic devices you have on hand contain gold it can be a good idea to recycle these. Extracting precious metals like gold from electronics is known as harvesting. It’s not easy to extract gold from some electronic devices but gold prices are at all-time highs and you can get a higher return on this metal than other types of scrap metal.

Lead

Lead may not be the most glamorous scrap metal but I can’t prove to be lucrative at the scrap metal yard. That’s because lead is traditionally coveted by recycling centers and in high demand. It may be more difficult to transport to the scrap metal dealer given its heavy weight. Luckily, TM Scrap Metals does have a mobile recycling feature and can come to you to pick up this profitable scrap metal.

L.A. Recycling Center Drives Down Production Cost

Los Angeles recycling center TM Scrap Metals can assist businesses by helping to save money on production costs. Sun Valley, California, where TM Scrap Metals is located (on the border of Burbank), is home to several manufacturing companies. These range from medical device manufacturers to aerospace. In each case these companies need and use metal in their production.

Of course in any production facility not every bit of metal will be used in the production process. Also there will be some amount of waste. All this wasted metal or excess scrap, if it were thrown away, would be an extra cost for these companies. They pay for certain amount of the metal that they need to facilitate production and any waste metal (aka scrap metal) that gets tossed in the garbage is simply a waste of money.

recycling center in los angeles saves on production costs

Companies like these which are involved in production can save money by recycling the leftover metals. Some companies have this ability in-house while others do not and need to find a local recycling center such as TM Scrap Metals. When a company brings excess metal scrap to TM Scrap Metals, first and foremost they are remunerated for those metals. That means they’re not throwing that money away. The money gained from the recycling these excess metals helps to keep production costs down.

This is a win-win situation for the company as well as consumers. A company which is manufacturing these products saves money through recycling and because of that does not have to charge extra to cover wasted material. They do not have to pass that extra cost along to other businesses or consumers who buy their products. We talked about altruistic reasons for recycling scrap metals here in Los Angeles but there are purely monetary reasons to do so.

Those manufacturing firms that are located near us in Sun Valley, California can easily bring their scrap metal to our recycling facility but others who are located further away, throughout the San Fernando Valley or a greater Los Angeles can benefit from TM Scrap Metals’ mobile recycling service. It may not be convenient or easy to transport large amounts of scrap metal so it makes sense to use a company like ours which can come to you, remove your scrap metal, take it back to our recycling yard and begin the recycling process.

If you’re looking for a way to save on production costs, call TM scrap metals today. 818-771-0510,

Scrap Metal Recycling Facts

A Los Angeles recycling center like TM Scrap Metals sees a lot of different metals come through our doors. It should come as no surprise that one of the top metals we recycle is aluminum from aluminum cans. Aside from being lightweight and relatively easy to collect in exchange for cash, aluminum cans, when recycled, also save a lot of energy. It’s just one more reason that scrap metal recycling company like us performs a valuable service that you may not have thought about period

Los Angeles recycling center aluminum

There’s a wealth of information online about recycling, scrap metal and the benefits of reusing these materials. The website lessismore.com provides an overview of recycling benefits as does the Waste Management website. These are only two out of hundreds if not thousands of websites dedicated to and promoting the idea of recycling.

In Los Angeles and indeed all of California we have seen power outages as well as rolling brown outs, especially during summer months, as a result of us using too much electricity. Anything that can help reduce the drain on our power grid is welcome and that is precisely what scrap metal recycling does.

It takes much less energy to turn a scrap metal such as aluminum into another product. In the case of aluminum cans it takes 95% less energy to melt them down and make new aluminum cans that it would take to create aluminum cans from all new materials. As the Waste Management website points out, recycling a ton of aluminum six 14,000 kW of energy and something like 1,600 gallons of oil. Those are resources that do not have to be used because we are recycling.

You may never have thought about the amount of energy saved by recycling scrap metal but it’s food for thought. Every ton of metal that you bring to a scrap metal recycling center like TM Scrap Metals in Los Angeles means thousands of gallons of fuel and thousands of kilowatts of energy can be used elsewhere. If you need to recycle scrap metal in Burbank, Los Angeles or San Fernando valley area call TM Scrap Metals. And remember we have a mobile recycling service so we can come to you matter where you are.

Los Angeles Area Scrap Metal Hardness Test

Scrap metal recycling centers in Los Angeles–including TM Scrap Metals in the Burbank area—use different tools or methods to identify particular metals. In a previous scrap metal post we discussed using a magnet to differentiate between ferrous and nonferrous metals but that only goes so far. Let’s say you’ve got a truckload of different types of nonferrous metals all mixed together. How can you tell one metal from another? Sometimes it may be easy if it’s just one particular metal. The reddish hue of copper is very familiar. But what about metals that may look similar such as stainless steel and aluminum? One type of testing that will help identify medal is hardness testing and one of the methods of testing the hardness metals is the Brinell hardness test.

Scrap metal hardness test: copper

Every metal has its own hardness or softness depending on which way you look at it. Some metals like lead or gold are going to be very soft compared to steel or aluminum. Each metal has its own molecular makeup that determines how hard or soft it is and there’s a way to reliably test a metal, and by determining how hard it is, identifying what metal it is. Like other hardness tests, the Brinell hardness test employs an object dropped onto a metal and the resulting indentation is measured. In this particular instance this method uses a special microscope called a Brinell microscope from which this method gets its name.

We are simplifying it greatly for the purposes of this article but in essence a special indentation tool is used, which impacts with specific force upon an unidentified metal. The indentation in the metal is then measured by the microscope and we can then tell what type of metal it is based on the amount of indentation.

The scrap metal recycling center near you may not use such sophisticated or scientific methods of identifying the scrap metals you bring in for recycling but we wanted to expand on the way that unknown metals can be identified. After all, a metal has to be identified to some extent in order to know what to pay you for your scrap metal. You don’t want to be paid the price of iron when in fact you are bringing in copper for recycling.

Regardless of the method used when you have a need to find a scrap metal recycling Center in Los Angeles, go with the professionals at TM Scrap Metals in Burbank/Sun Valley.
